Should You Go And Watch The Gran Turismo Movie? Here’s Our Review

Posted on August 11, 2023 | by Charley Williams Gran Turismo has been a fan-favourite video game franchise for over two decades. The film is based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough, the gamer who became a racer, achieving an impossible dream.  If you’re considering watching Gran Turismo, I have two words for you: DO IT. It has received some questionable reviews, and if you’re like me and enjoy reading what others have to say about something (which I hope you do, considering you’re reading my review), those bad ratings can most definitely put you off from watching. I admit, even from watching the trailers, I had doubts. But in all honesty, I think it’s absolutely brilliant. If you’re a motorsport fan or into your sim racing, you will 1000000% notice the little inconsistencies the film has – such as racing at different tracks to the one it’s said to be and turning their steering wheel in the opposite direction to what they are driving. A little annoying. The plot itself is also dramatised and very jumbled. Admittedly, it does cheapen an already incredible story. The truth behind Jann and Nissan’s attempt at Le Mans is really interesting and worth looking into if you haven’t already. It’s very Hollywood, but isn’t that what makes action films great? It literally exists to entertain you, and I laughed, cried and even sat on the edge of my seat for some scenes. Without getting too deep, it reminded me why I fell in love with motorsport all those years ago. The fast-paced driving action on the track kept me engaged and thrilled, just like any other motorsport series would. The dynamic between Jack, a chief race engineer and Jann was spot on, and all of the tiny visual nods to Playstation and Gran Turismo itself were the icing on the cake for me. A little bit of wholesomeness for you, on our way out from the cinema, there were two young lads in front of us who walked out and said, “I want to race!” – my heart just exploded – in those two and a half hours, this film had inspired two young lads to want to be a racing driver. If you go into this film expecting realism, you’ll be disappointed. It does dive into some levels of absolute absurdity. My advice, enjoy it for what it is, a feel-good racing film.
