Alex Albon Found Out Something Really Bizarre About His Williams In The Rain

Posted on August 10, 2023 | by Charley Williams Now, we’re not engineers. But generally, under normal weather conditions, your car should be grippier in the dry than in the wet, especially on slicks. But not for Alex Albon – he revealed that his tyres gave him more grip at the Belgian GP in the rain. Interesting. ???? Williams were excited about the Belgian GP, believing that the characteristics of the circuit would give them the best opportunity at scoring some points. However, that wasn’t actually the case. Despite Alex’s strong start as he stormed through the field, the second half of the race became more about preserving tyres than making up positions, dropping him to P14. The deg they experienced was high, with Alex stating, “it was a bit of a wake-up call”. Sector two was particularly tough for the FW45, with it being so extreme that the tyres couldn’t cool down before entering sector three. At a circuit where downforce is so important, the Williams car is working against the drivers. Luckily, the rain held out a helping hand when it came to cooling their overheated tyres down. Talking to the media, including The Race, Alex said: “You know what’s actually interesting to me was when it started to rain, it cooled down, and it gave me more grip than I had in the dry! “And so I actually caught them back up again and actually had a resurgence in pace. Which just shows you how much overheating we were doing.” So, when is our next rain-affected race scheduled for? We need to see an Albon masterclass! ????
