Albon Couldn’t Understand Where It All Went Wrong For Williams At Spa

Posted on August 1, 2023 | by Charley Williams Alex Albon has been one of the most impressive drivers of the season so far. He has wholly out-driven that car, pushing it to its limits and has proven to be an absolute dream for a team like Williams. He looked like he was on for another point-scoring race at the Belgian GP, but sadly – it wasn’t meant to be.  Alex spent a large portion of the first half of the race climbing up the grid, with many fans praising his impressive performance as he made up six positions on the opening two laps of the Belgian GP. The straight-line speed was a clear advantage, and it was only a short time before Albon had climbed from P15 to P7. But suddenly, it became a race for tyre preservation rather than points – which surprised the Williams driver, who finished the race back down in P14. Talking to the media, including The Race, Alex said: “I knew the start was good, and then almost surprised that I fell out of the points around the mid-stint. “I didn’t know where everyone leap-frogged me again, basically! And then, at the end of the stint, they’re just struggling with deg. “It was a tricky race, the whole race, because we’re running that low downforce, which is great fun in some ways, and in other ways, especially when you go through sector two, it’s not that fun anymore. “It’s just degrading the tyres so much.” He continued: “It was a bit of a wake-up call just how much deg we did have today. Particularly on that medium tyre. “And the other issue was, to race the cars around me, I was basically having to over-push in sector two because as soon as I backed off one corner, I was immediately under fire, almost immediately got overtaken by the car behind.” Disappointing for Williams, who has admitted their car is much better on particular tracks (low-drag, fast circuits, long straights) and was looking to Spa with optimism. Were you surprised by Albon’s drop-off in performance?
