Wolff Chooses Mercedes’ Best F1 Race Of 2023 And The Answer May Surprise You

Posted on December 20, 2023 | by Charley Williams While there were slim pickings for Toto Wolff to choose from when asked which race he felt was Mercedes’ best of the season, you’d have thought that ANYTHING ELSE would have been a better choice than this, right?  But you know, Wolff may be onto something. He chose… drumroll please, the US Grand Prix. Austin. You know, the one they were disqualified from. Lewis Hamilton finished a strong second in COTA, just behind Max Verstappen, despite the team pondering strategy for a little too long, which brought him out behind Lando Norris in P3 at the start of his final stint. But Lewis was on the charge and, eventually, within striking distance of a very dominant Red Bull. With a few more laps, he could have potentially battled for the win – something that has definitely been missing throughout the 2023 season. But post-race checks found the plank underneath Hamilton’s car had worn too thin and, as a result, he was disqualified from the race, along with Charles Leclerc. But despite losing a podium, Toto Wolff says it still represented the team’s best race of the year. In the Mercedes season review, he answered the question thusly: “This might sound strange because we got disqualified, but Austin [was the best race]! “We brought an upgrade package that worked, the car was performing well, and we were hunting down the leader. You could say, ‘well, you were disqualified for a car that was too low’, but the genuine performance was there and that was an enjoyable weekend. “I’ve always said that I’d rather have a fast car that we haven’t tuned in the right way. “And obviously, you need to finish. But that was the best weekend overall, seeing that the correlation between the wind tunnel and the track was good.” Interesting way of looking at it! ????
