Oscar Piastri Refuses To Use ‘Bad Luck’ As An Excuse For Brazil GP Disaster

Posted on November 6, 2023 | by Charley Williams You know those people that just say sorry for every minor inconvenience? That’s how we imagine Oscar Piastri to be. The McLaren driver fell victim to other drivers’ lap 1 dramas and was on his way to retire the car until a red flag was thrown.  But despite not actually being physically involved in the Turn 1 collision between Alex Albon and Kevin Magnussen, with Piastri starting alongside it all, he was also unfortunately involved in the tale of the flying tyre. And after hitting his car, it was damaged enough to trigger a retirement. He pitted at the end of the first lap, but as he arrived at the garage, a red flag was thrown, and the team pulled together to attempt to fix the car and get Oscar back on track. A rear wing and a floor change later, he was ready to roll – albeit from the pitlane. But whilst other drivers would have called the incident “unlucky” or “right place, wrong time”, Oscar had a different outlook and said it was his fault for putting himself in that position in the first place. He told the media, including The Race: “It’s a shame. There was nothing I could have done, but when you qualify in those kinds of positions, you leave yourself much more at risk of stuff like that. It all kind of starts from Friday, unfortunately.” He continued: “There has been bad luck, but I think at the same time, the saying ‘you make your own luck’ is very true. “From myself and the team, Friday, we didn’t execute as well as we should have. And in some ways, that’s put me in 10th on the grid and left me more at risk of stuff like that happening. “If I was starting where Lando was starting or further up front, I wouldn’t have been in that crash. “You’ve got to try and put yourself in the best position possible, no point blaming bad luck and not reflecting on things you can improve.” He admitted that his race effectively became a test session, but as it was the first time he had raced there, he took the extra 70 laps of driving as a way to learn for next year. Talk about making the best out of a bad situation! ???? Where do you think Oscar could have finished if it wasn’t for the lap 1 incident?
