We Did Not Expect Charles Leclerc To Break The Rare Mexican GP Pole Streak

Posted on October 29, 2023 | by Charley Williams We still can’t believe that Charles Leclerc starts the Mexican GP at the front of the grid today, not because he’s not talented – of course he is. But Ferrari were pretty much nowhere during the practice sessions, and everyone was surprised to see them pull off a front row lockout.  The pace quite literally came out of nowhere as Leclerc pipped his teammate, Carlos Sainz to pole position by 0.067 seconds, while Max Verstappen, starting in third, was 0.097s off the top spot. Leclerc himself said: “We did not expect to be on pole. We were struggling in final practice again but for some reason when we put the new tyres on everything came together. “But I am not even thinking about pole. I am already thinking about the race. We have had enough poles and we need to do better in the races.” Charles may not be thinking about his pole position, but we certainly are. When we tweeted this (pretty impressive) statistic regarding the Mexican GP, there was no chance we were expecting Charles to break the streak – especially with Max’s habit of breaking curses and records this year ???? The Mexican GP has had 11 different polesitters across its first seven years back on the F1 calendar and its last four appearances in the 1980/90s. But Leclerc, who also took pole here in 2019, becomes only the third repeat polesitter in Mexico in the modern era, joining Ayrton Senna (1986, ’88 and ’89) and Nigel Mansell (1987 and ’92). Not bad, huh? Do you think Charles can pull off a race win today? Let us know in the comments!
