Fernando Alonso Admits He “Cannot Find Maximum” With Aston Upgrades

Posted on October 29, 2023 | by Dre Harrison It’s not been a good week for Fernando Alonso. A Q1 exit in Austin, a fantastic comeback in the race taken away by floor damage, and now another horrid Quali session in Mexico, and another early shower for the Spaniard! ???? Alonso had his second spin of the Mexican weekend in Q1 to bring out a late yellow, which ironically, probably led to him surviving a possible elimination, before being knocked in Q2 in 13th place! In his media scrum that included The Race, Alonso went into detail on the recent upgrade package that Aston’s flipped back and forth on after debuting in Monza.  “[The car] is very tricky.”, said Alonso. “Yesterday at a high-speed corner, I lost the car, today on kerbs I lost the car. It seems that we’re on the edge of the grip always. Been slow in every session so not a bad qualifying or anything like that, we’ve been struggling the whole weekend. We need to work together to get back to our best level which is obviously not the one we’re showing.” When asked if the Austin upgrade package was now holding them back though, Fernando disagreed. “We don’t have any concerns about that. We had the Austin race which we used as a comparison between the two packages and the results were clear in favour of the new package. Seems we’re not very confident now on the car, driving. We cannot extract the maximum and this is penalising us a lot. “We need to find more performance, everyone is trying to do their best. Still feel confident that we will show better from now until Abu Dhabi, and also tomorrow. We scored points in Austin starting from pitlane, hopefully, tomorrow we can still score points.” Clearly, a knock to the confidence for Fernando, but he’s still confident he has a “plan” to some points tomorrow… Do you think Fernando gets back in the points for the race?
