Liam Lawson Would Not Be Happy As A Reserve Driver In 2024

Posted on September 21, 2023 | by Charley Williams Liam Lawson has impressed F1 fans across the world since he debuted in Zandvoort, especially after scoring his first-ever points in Singapore last week. But has he impressed the right people?  Lawson is only three races into his F1 career, and he’s exceeded expectations as Daniel Ricciardo’s stand-in. He stepped into an AlphaTauri that has failed to perform throughout the 2023 season and has really taken it by the reins. In his short time as a Formula 1 driver, he’s raced in dry conditions, mixed with slicks, mixed with inters and heavy rain and managed to finish just outside of the points in both Zandvoort and Monza. Singapore was the biggest test for Lawson, a physically and mentally demanding track that will punish you if you make the smallest of mistakes – which both Logan Sargeant and George Russell learnt. Yet, in his first time racing there, he made it into Q3 on his third try and gave AlphaTauri their best race finish this season. Whilst there is no official confirmation on whether he’ll be on the F1 grid next year or not, he has made his feelings on the matter clear. Talking to the media, including The Race, he said: “I wouldn’t be happy to go back to being reserve. “Obviously, I know how hard it is to get into Formula 1, and I understand that can be really, really difficult sometimes. “So obviously, what will happen will happen. I haven’t really thought about it too much, I’m just trying to make the most of this.” There are only two possible teams he could end up in – Williams, who are still yet to decide on their second driver. AlphaTauri also has two empty seats, though it’s likely they’ll continue their relationship with Yuki Tsunoda and Ricciardo. Would you like to see Lawson on the grid next year?
